Which surgery is right for you?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The right weight loss surgery depends on your goals, your health, and what’s going to suit your lifestyle long-term. At Brisbane Bariatric Centre, we’ll walk you through your options and give honest recommendations based on experience.
Sleeve gastrectomy
This is the most commonly performed procedure. It involves removing part of the stomach to create a narrow “sleeve.” It helps reduce appetite and limits how much you can eat, making it easier to lose weight steadily.
Gastric bypass
This procedure creates a small stomach pouch and re-routes the digestive tract. It’s more complex but can be highly effective, particularly for patients with reflux or type 2 diabetes.
Single anastomosis gastric bypass
A newer, streamlined version of the traditional bypass that may offer similar weight loss results with a simpler surgical process and shorter operating time.
No matter which option you choose, your treatment plan is tailored to you, and you’ll have expert guidance at every step.

These procedures can lead to significant health improvements, reducing risks associated with obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, and high blood pressure. It's not just about shedding kilos; it's about gaining a better quality of life.
At Brisbane Bariatric Centre, we focus on providing clear information and support, helping you make informed decisions about your health.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about surgery, recovery and what to expect.
How do I cover the cost of surgery?
If you don’t have private health insurance, you may be able to access your Superannuation or apply for a medical loan to fund your procedure. We’ll explain the options clearly and help with the paperwork if needed.
How much time will I need off work?
It depends on the type of surgery and the work you do. Some people are back within a week, others may need a little longer. We’ll give you a realistic guide during your consultation.
What are the risks of surgery?
All surgery carries some risk, but serious complications are uncommon. We’ll talk you through the actual statistics and what we do to keep you safe before, during, and after your procedure.
What are the long-term outcomes?
Most patients lose 60–80% of their excess weight within 12–18 months. Many see improvements in things like diabetes, sleep apnoea and joint pain. The key to success is sticking with follow-up and support.
Is surgery better than weight loss medication?
It depends on your health, weight, and goals. For many people, surgery offers more effective and longer-lasting results than medication alone, but we’ll always discuss all your options first.
